BRAZEN DEFENDANT STEALS PHONE
WHILE IN COURTROOM ON UNRELATED CHARGES
MOUNT CLEMENS, MI — An Eastpointe man is being charged with larceny in a building, a four year felony, for a crime he allegedly committed while in court on unrelated charges.
On June 26, 2019, the Defendant was in the 16th Judicial Circuit Court, awaiting sentencing in front of Judge Carl Marlinga, for charges stemming from a 2017 traffic stop incident. While awaiting his turn in front of the Judge, it is alleged that the Defendant noticed an unattended cellular phone on the bench in front of him. Further, it is alleged that he proceeded to sit down beside where the phone was resting on the bench, and inconspicuously place his hat over the phone, before maneuvering his hat in a way that he was able to grab the phone and slide it into his pocket unnoticed.
When the owner of the phone returned to collect it from the bench, he noticed it missing and approached the courtroom Deputy for assistance. Luckily, the quick thinking Deputy was able to pull the courtroom video feed, which provided an excellent view of the courtroom and the phone being taken by another individual.
“The audacity of this defendant is alarming. He is already in Court, awaiting sentencing on multiple unrelated charges,” stated Prosecutor Smith, “And yet, he is captured on video breaking the law once again.”
Smith continued, “My office greatly appreciates the swift reaction of the courtroom Deputy, coming to the aide of the victim. His prompt attention to this matter more than likely contributed to the recovery of the victim’s phone.”
The defendant will be arraigned today, August 2, 2019, at 1:15 P.M., at 41-B District Court, located in Clinton Township.
