MOTHER CHARGED WITH MURDER OF TWO-YEAR-OLD SON
September 23, 2013
MOUNT CLEMENS, MI — A mother from Shelby Township, Michigan is alleged to have left her two-year-old son locked alone in a minivan until he was dead.
Macomb County Prosecutor Eric J. Smith and Shelby Police Chief Roland Woelkers today charged Audrionna Rhoades with 2nd Degree Murder, a life felony, and an additional count of Child Abuse – Leaving a Child in a Vehicle Resulting in Death, a 15-year felony.
Police and prosecutors allege that Rhoades, 21, left son James Nelson buckled to the seat in the van at 8:30 a.m. and then drove another car to work. At 6:00 p.m., Rhoades’s roommate noticed James’s foot through the window of the van. The child was freed from the vehicle and rushed to Beaumont hospital, where he died a short time later.
“This mother showed a reckless disregard for the safety of her child,” said Prosecutor Smith. “Our office will use every resource to seek justice for James Nelson.”
Rhoades will be arraigned before Judge Douglas Shepherd in 41-A District Court, Shelby Township on September 24, 2013, at 1:30pm.
