PROSECUTOR SALUTES STAFF IN HONOR OF ARMED FORCES DAY
May 20, 2019
MOUNT CLEMENS, MICHIGAN— Over the weekend, May 18, 2019, was officially Armed Forces Day. It is the third Saturday of May and it is a day to pay tribute to the brave men and women who serve the United States Armed Forces. Monday, Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith paid tribute to Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Kumar Palepu who is an officer in the Michigan Air National Guard.
“Kumar is an exemplary Assistant Prosecuting Attorney,” said Prosecutor Smith. “His exceptional military experience and enhanced skill-set have made him an invaluable asset to our office and I have no doubt he is an excellent Judge Advocate.”
Prosecutor Smith assigned Kumar to the lead Assistant Prosecuting Attorney position for the Macomb County Veteran Treatment Court program for the past four years. His varied skill-set made him a highly effective part of the Veteran Court treatment team, coordinating mental health and drug rehabilitation services for defendants with probation officers, the VA hospital
coordinator, and the Veteran Treatment Court Judge. Palepu is currently a member of Prosecutor Smith’s Child Protection Unit, which works closely with Care House, prosecuting defendants that sexually and physically assault children.
Although created on August 31, 1949, Armed Forces Day did not become an official holiday until established in 1962 under President John F. Kennedy. “I have a deep respect for our military servicemen and women, and relish the opportunity to offer my support through employment,” Prosecutor Smith said. “They deserve our utmost appreciation and respect for their commitment to our county.”
Our Nation has relied heavily on Guard and Reserve Service members since entering continuous military operations more than a decade ago. According to the Department of Defense, employer support enhances retention rates in the Armed Forces and, in the end, strengthens our national security. This past September, Prosecutor Smith was honored to receive the Patriot Award for his outstanding support of an employee, Kristin Rivard, who was actively serving in the Naval Reserves.
First Lieutenant Palepu serves as a Judge Advocate General in the 127th Wing of the Michigan Air National Guard located on Selfridge Air National Guard Base.
