PROSECUTOR CHARGES STUDENT WITH POSSESSING A WEAPON
MOUNT CLEMENS, MI — Yesterday, a male student brought a knife with him to school. Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith authorized a charge of Weapon-Free Schools – Possessing a Weapon, a 93-day misdemeanor, against the student.
Police and prosecutors allege that on Thursday, October 31, 2019, the defendant, a student, brought a 2.5 inch black handled kitchen knife to De La Salle Collegiate High School, in Warren, MI. The defendant presented the knife to two of his friends, also students. Fearing for their safety, as well as the safety of the defendant and other students at the school, they alerted another friend, who was able to use his personal phone to call 9-1-1.
Police arrived and detained the defendant without incident. They were also able to recover the knife from the defendant’s locker.
“We commend the students for taking the matter seriously and calling 9-1-1. It is quite possible that their actions prevented a tragedy from occurring,” stated Prosecutor Eric J. Smith.
